It has been a member of FidoNet since 1992 with the node number 2:370/15. In the beginning it was supported by a local computer service (in Debrecen), who let an old machine to hide behind a desk in the back room, and use the phone line in the night when the shop was closed. The first version was using a (half-pirated shareware) version of SuperBBS on DR-DOS. The first modem was a plain 2400 bps Microcom, which was upgraded to a seriously better 2400-MNP5 modem later. As time passed, the technology got extremely modern: the ESDI disks were replaced by ultra-modern IDE disks, the CPU was upgraded to a seriously fast i486 and the modem got replaced by various ZyXel modems, which were able to push the original 2 KB/s speed by using 9600, then 19200 bps, symmetrically, using their own developed protocols.

Later it has been moved (due to reasons) to grins home in 1994, and stayed there for the rest of its life. The operating system was eventually replaced by the ever-mighty OS/2, which ran the system pretty reliably throughout the years. The FidoNet software was replaced by Xenia, the BBS software by RemoteAccess, and it's been collecting users and files in due course. On the FidoNet connection user groups started to born and thrive, and the community was growing.

The system got struck by thunder twice. First it blew the monitor in my face (and also burned the modem), and stuff was mostly replaced; the disk and the machine survived. The second thunder around 2000 was marking the end of the BBS, since theese phone-based systems were in a decline since Internet took over.

Lot of the files were lost. Some was not. Internet was around.

So after a while there was a Wiki system created with lots of files, and started collecting some people.

The MySQL happened. Database was basically destroyed (in a way that backups were of no use at all, which is normal for MySQL). Motivation sunk.

As time passed, I have pulled up another wiki, again. (This time no MySQL around, it's using PostgreSQL.) But lot of files were gone and no motivation to regnerate.
So this wiki is here to collect whatever I want to share, or whatever people want to share.

Just like the original LifeForce WHQ have done.
Later it has been moved (due to reasons) to grins home, and stayed there for the rest of its life.

Editing
Registration is open. It means that plenty of spambots register. Since we do not need a lot of articles about penis enlargement and get money fast scams and like, edit permission is handed out manually.
If you feel like you can be a constructive part of the site you send your registered account name to @grin:grin.hu on matrix or by email using wiki-reg address under the drop.grin.hu subdomain, and preferably include what you really want to do.

This page collects and lists resources for new and experienced public server admins, which may help to run a real, public service without too much pain.

Admins help admins: if you can add advices, howtos, code, and you have some time, please register and notify @grin:grin.hu' on Matrix to enable editing rights for you.

Server independent resources
These are either generic advices, descriptions, howtos, or code using the public APIs hopefully implemented by most of the servers.

The Basics
What it means to be admin a public server; what is what; what are the common pitfalls and how to avoid them; where can you ask for help; <small>who to avoid</small>

How To
The usual admin tasks on matrix.

Useful code
Web or console programs to manage servers, user, using standard API.

Server dependent resources
Synapse
Synapse is the proof-of-concept server from Element (New Vector Ltd., Element Software SARL, Element Software Inc, Element Software GmbH) written in Python (a scripting language) using PostgreSQL (a relational database server). It was the first functional matrix server. The development is Element-driven, with occasional input considered from the community.

Basics
* about the server
* about the db

How To
* server maintenance
* db maintenance
* admin tools

...

Conduit family
Conduit
Conduit is an independent(?) server implementation in Rust, based on the Ruma API library. It has been designed to be fast, reliable, scalable, lightweight, low-cost, community-driven alternative to Synapse.

...

Tuwunel
Tuwunel is the fork of Conduwuit, which was a fork of Conduit concentrating on high performance, correctness and rich feature set. It is written in Rust and based on the Ruma API library. Apart from also community-driven, Tuwunel is operated by enterprise users with a vested interest in sponsoring its continued development, maintained by full-time staff.

Basics
...

How To
...

Continuwuity
Continuwuity is a fork of Conduwuit (which was a fork of Conduit) by group of community contributors, who have forked the project to continue its development, fix outstanding issues, and add new features.

Dendrite
Dendrite was an independent server implementation in Golang, which was acquired by Element. It's been planned as "an efficient, reliable and scalable alternative to Synapse -- eventually".

Other discontinued, alpha or test servers
Since most of these are not ready for public service, they are not listed here.
These like The Construct, Telodendria, and another dozen of discontinued servers.

See v1.0 means to me as something a server operator (who offers public services) expect from a prod ready server.

The Servers in development
There are some projects planning to create a real server, but none of them are ready. In order of completeness:

The Construct
It is written in C++, based on compressed RocksDB as a storage backend, by a single independent developer.

The server has a working private version, lacking some features required for public use.

The developer (Jason) is actively blocked from the specification process by Element, Inc., also they deliberately ignore reports about Synapse protocol incompatible behaviour causing problems in the development. This also results no coordination of protocol development with the developer which makes the protocol as a moving target for implementation, which severely hinders development.

Dendrite
Dendrite is organised by Element, Inc. (the principal developer left around november 2022, and now a team seem to develop it); it is written in goloang.

The server has a partial implementation of the Matrix protocol, and some working private test servers exist.

Conduit
It is written in Rust (building on Ruma matrix framework) by one independent developer, and uses a RocksDB backend.

The server has a partial implementation of the Matrix protocol, and some working private test servers exist.

Welcome to the latest reincarnation of the LifeForce WHQ BBS, also known as 2:370/15 on FidoNet!

This is the English language starting page, which may or mat not be in loose sync with the other languages, most importantly Hungarian.

What is this?
This is a random collection of texts (ranging from serious tutorials to incomprehensible mumblings), files, and references to various available services, most of them about communication.

The original BBS cocept was based on two activity:
* sharing stuff, and
* conversation between people.

History
The BBS started operations somewhere in Hungary around 1986 using an 1200 bps (and baud as well) modem without any error correction. Originally it have briefly used Remote Access, then for a long-long time SuperBBS, ran on DOS.
For a more detailed recollection of its history see History of LifeForce.
